Mineral Pools vs Low-Chlorine Pools: What's the Difference?

Quick answer: Mineral pools and low-chlorine pools are related but not the same thing. A mineral pool uses a specific blend of mineral salts (such as magnesium and potassium) alongside UV or ozone to reduce chlorine demand. A low-chlorine pool is a broader term covering any pool that runs below the standard 1–3 ppm chlorine range — including mineral pools, ozone-only systems, UV systems, and hydrogen peroxide-based systems. All mineral pools are low-chlorine, but not all low-chlorine pools are mineral pools.

Mineral Pools

A mineral pool uses a blend of minerals — typically magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, and sometimes sodium chloride — dissolved in the water. The minerals themselves don't sanitise; they create a softer, gentler water environment and work alongside a sanitising system to reduce how much chlorine is needed.

Most mineral pool systems combine the mineral blend with one or more of the following:

  • Ozone generator — oxidises contaminants before they react with chlorine, reducing combined chlorine (chloramines) and overall chlorine demand
  • UV sanitiser — destroys bacteria and algae without adding chemicals
  • Low-output chlorinator or manual dosing — maintains a small chlorine residual (typically 0.5–1 ppm) as a backup sanitiser

Key maintenance differences for mineral pool systems:

  • Target free chlorine: 0.5–1 ppm (not the standard 1–3 ppm) — always check your system supplier's specific range
  • Stabiliser (CYA): generally not used — UV components can be sensitive to high CYA, and the lower chlorine target makes UV protection less critical
  • Mineral levels need periodic top-ups (typically every few months) as they drop through splash-out, backwashing, and rain dilution
  • Standard DPD test kits work fine for measuring chlorine, pH, and alkalinity

Ozone-Only Systems

An ozone generator produces ozone gas (O₃) which is injected into the pool water to oxidise contaminants. Ozone is a powerful sanitiser but breaks down quickly and leaves no residual in the water — so a small chlorine backup (0.5–1 ppm) is still typically maintained. No mineral blend is involved.

UV Systems

A UV sanitiser exposes pool water to ultraviolet light as it passes through the system, destroying bacteria and algae without chemicals. Like ozone, UV leaves no residual, so a chlorine backup is still needed. UV systems are often combined with ozone or mineral systems rather than used alone.

Hydrogen Peroxide Systems

Some pools use hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) as the primary sanitiser instead of chlorine. These are genuinely chlorine-free, but require their own specific testing and dosing approach. Standard chlorine test kits don't measure peroxide levels.
